This was such a poignant presentation.
wow … Wow … WOW
I have been dismayed for years by much of what I have heard on radio and watched on cable T.V. that passes for the Christian gospel.
I hope this message jolts the saints who have been lulled into a deep sleep by the deception of the prosperity gospel.
I don’t believe God wants my wife to have a miscarriage or my little girl to fly the windshield of a car either. There’s a good place to be in the center of this. God wants me healthy, saved, with enough money to be able to bless people other than just my family. I have plenty of things I want to do for other people right now and don’t have the money to do it. I believe God honors that desire if I am true to it.
Hi Reverend Right
I don’t think Dr Piper was saying that God wants your child to suffer or your wife to lose a baby. My wife lost our baby in 2003 and like Dr Piper said, I can say that God was enough. I know that one day I will see my little girl and hold her in my arms. That is the hope I have as a Christian. What is shameful is our preoccupation with money. When we consider consumerism that exists in our western churches it puts me to shame. We in the west use more material goods than equivalent of 8 families elsewhere. That means your single family or my single family consumes so much that it could legitimately sustain 8 other families elsewhere. But when is enough, enough? Is it when I drive latest BMW, Bentley or Rolles Royce? It is shameful to see prosperity Gospel ministers preach from their literal thrones, in highly decorated chairs that makes them look exalted yet there are children dying from starvation in their neighbourhoods. You don’t even have to go to Africa or India to see such disparity, I am ashamed to be associated with anyone claiming to be a Christian who’s objective is to be rich but does nothing to help others who are less fortunate then he/she is.
I am not anti rich or anti Capitalist but I am very much anti greed. And when people preach that God wants you to be rich they forsake the massage of the gospel for the sake of the money. Jesus himself said you can not serve two masters, its either Jesus or Mamon. “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” Matthew 6:24
“Where your heart is there your treasure is”, Jesus tells us elsewhere.
Solomon wisely said Proverbs 30:8-9 remove far from me vanity and a lying word; give me neither poverty or riches; tear for me my portion of bread, 9 lest I be full and deceive, and say, Who is Jehovah? Or lest I be poor, and steal, and violate the name of my God.
“The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.”
-Proverbs 29:7
“Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless.”
-Ecclesiastes 5:10
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have.”
-Hebrews 13:5
